Interview and Book review- Towards Winning- Dr. Karunakar B. : by Kashish Saini & Shreya G.

It was on one lazy Sunday afternoon, I have decided to hit the bookstore and get myself a good book. As I was strolling down the management section I came across this book “Towards  Winning”. As a first-year Student pursuing MBA this book seemed to be like any other management book which come up with the same old techniques which are supposed to bring in a great transformational change. After knowing more about the author Dr.Karunakar and skimming through reviews & preface, I have decided to get this book.

I was Completely taken aback and my first impression towards this book changed as I kept turning each page. Dr.Karunakar wonderfully takes us through a step by step journey of becoming not only a great leader but also a successful person, through his protagonist Dev. The author portrays Dev as an ambitious person who never gives up on his dreams and who works towards them with a zealot. Dev starts his life as an engineer and ends up being Dean of premium B-School through needles and thorns.

The most intriguing part of the book is that it is not a typical management self-help book but it is a lot more than that. He takes you through a journey of 6 steps to transform one’s life with graphs, real-life examples, day-to-day incidents, learning’s and action plans. It is a perfect 160 pages work-book to your managerial dream. The book helps you to analyze yourself and you end up finding more about you. Dr.Karunakar beautifully brings out his concepts by talking about great personnel such as Mahatma Gandhi, Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachan and also by giving examples through award-winning movies like Lagaan and ChakDe India.

At the end of the book, Dr.Karunakar successfully conveniences us that being an Inner and Outer winner, with problem-solving skills and by Re-Engineering yourself constantly, we will find ourselves at the other end of our dream tunnel.

A BIASED BEGINNING: by Naveeta Gupta

Follow your dreams, they all say. Go for what you are passionate about. Take the road not taken. Create your own path by doing something different. Amidst all the preaching, we forget the harsh reality that we all don’t start at the same page, we all don’t get the freedom to be what we want to and how destiny serves dilemma to our table to make it a Biased Beginning.

PART-I

It was just another Sunday morning for Swati, she was messing around the house, wiping the kitchen-slab, grabbing her toast and running to catch her cab which had been waiting outside for a while. She pulled the door of the cab, sat down, and apologized to the driver saying, “Sorry bhaiya! I will try to be on time from tomorrow.” The driver smiled as he pressed on the gas pedal, ‘cause he knew there wasn’t any end to her tardiness’. The sunny morning with wind blowing her hair around initiated her chain of thoughts, or rather regrets, that she never gets to be with her family not even on Sundays. And this thought took her down the memory lane to the series of instances which changed her life.

Five years back, she was working hard to become one of the best and renowned dancers of India. Dance, was her passion, her life. She couldn’t even think about not being a dancer. She was one of the best dancers of her academy, had won many state level competitions and was appreciated by everyone. She was so happy in enjoying this phase of her life. But little did she know what destiny has planned for her. Next, she was given with an opportunity to learn further in U.S.A at a workshop. Only a few privileged ones like her had a choice. But life gave her a hard hit, she was not privileged enough to continue and pursue her dreams. She financed her dance classes out of her pocket money and now she couldn’t afford all the expenses to go abroad. She couldn’t even stress her family as she belongs to a middle-class family and know how much pain her parents are taking to make her life better, she couldn’t ask for more. Being the only child, she had responsibilities to fulfill. Her parents expected her to be successful, earn a handsome salary and have consistency in life. She wanted to give it all back to her parents, live for them so she chose to be an engineer and now what she does is all work, work, and work. Nonetheless, how much she wanted to go with her passion, she chose to go and lead a life which most of us are forced to live as we fail to fight back our destiny.

PART-II

It was a great day for Shanaya, she was busy setting up things, making sure everything is perfect. While she was checking for the music system, she caught a glance of herself into the big mirror covering one of the walls of her dance academy, and, felt proud and ecstatic, like never before. Her happiness knew no bound as it was the D-day when her dreams were getting fulfilled. She had waited for five long years for this day to come. Her hard-work, her persistency, her talent made her one of the best and renowned dancers of India. She worked hard in her journey to get to this position but being born with a silver spoon, she was always provided with the best she could have. She was taught by the best dancers from the world and got the opportunity to pursue her dreams without giving a thought to other things in life.

Both Swati and Shanaya were from the same academy, equally talented, but Shanaya was able to grab the opportunity and live her dreams and Swati focused on finding stability in her life. In doing so, Swati just fulfilled everybody’s dream, gave happiness to everybody, made them proud but forgot to live a little for herself. This is how life works.

Compromising on your dreams to find stability, is it wrong? It’s not wrong, sometimes life leaves us with no choice but to quantify a simple livelihood over dreams. We say everybody is born with equal opportunities, equal freedom to follow their dreams, but it is not always the way we paint the picture in our mind.

It is mostly a Biased Beginning.

Friendship Bands : by Vybhav Shetty

Once again this day comes to pass
When my hands are adorned with colorful bands
their significance majestic and their show grand
so look with contempt, wonder and awe
as I show you my bands, my friendship bands.

Bonds of every color and size I do possess
some closer to my heart and some further than the rest
some have remained firmly over the years and
some have fallen down leaving behind tears.
so look closely as each of it tells it’s story
these bands, these friendship bands.

I have bands that have changed colors
sometimes for better and sometimes for worse
some are there, on which are written obnoxious names
these are the one’s that love me just the same
so watch as I flaunt this myriad of strings,
these bands, these friendship bands.

They are knotted to last a lifetime
but not all do stand the test of time
sometimes I was to blame, while for others
the situation couldn’t be tamed
so watch my celebration and repentance with
these bands, these friendship bands

I have one that stays foremost
supremacy over others, is of which it boasts
the best and worst all it has seen
with the tightest of bonds it reigns
so watch it hurl and furl about
this band, this friendship band.

The meek, the rude.the gentle, the crude
I walk with an arsenal of all
together our paths we shall chalk
and to the end of it we shall walk
so watch me as my promises lay broken and fulfilled
these bonds, these friendship bonds.

Parivar :by Ruchi Gupta

parivar… shabd chhota par mayene bade
jaise bina samjhaye ek dusre k vichhar samjhle
sukh dukh mei ek dusre k saath khade rahe
kuch bhul chuk hojaye to fatafat maaf karde
parivaar.. shabd chhota par mayene bade

Thode din ki duri se yaad apne aap aajaye
par saath rahe to jhagda bhi roz uth aaye

ek dusre ka drishtikon samajhna hi nahi chahate
iske chalte jhagade badhne hai lage
parivaar shabd chhota or maayne badal gaye
sbka ahankar aa gya h itna aade
ki dur ho rhe h log bina vajah ke
chahiye iska hal.. halaat bigadne se pehle
parivaar shabd chhota or maayne badal gaye
ek dusre par chillane se pehle do baar vichaar kare
apne aap k baare mei soche par pehle dusro ka dhyaan kare
banaye or badhaye pyaar samaan aapas mei
taki sab saath mil kr zindagi khushi se jiye
parivaar shabd chhota par tb maayne na badlenge.

Movie Review – Forrest Gump: by Srinavya

This movie is based on the book by the same name written by Winston Groom. The movie is about a man named Forrest Gump and spans across several decades of his life who witnesses many historical events in the 20th century of United States like pop-culture, civil rights movement, Vietnam War, Watergate scandal and many more. The leading man character was played by “Tom Hanks”, whose characteristics were of a slow-witted but kind-hearted and sympathetic man with an IQ of 75. The movie is a mixture of both comedy and drama which jells well so perfectly that neither of those feels as extremities, at the same time balances each other. The lead actor who is known for getting into the skin of the roles that he plays doesn’t disappoint this time either. He not just adapts the character but also gives a new dimension and meaning to the character which makes us look at life in a different way. His character has a blissful ignorance and warmly embraced nature which was never shown before. Tom Hanks plays the character so well that even after decades the future generation will remember fondly. The background score and writing go together so perfectly that neither makes it feel out of place. The supporting characters Jenny Curran, Lieutenant Dan Taylor Bubba Blue and Mrs Gump played by Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Mykelti Williamson and sally field respectively has given a breath-taking performance. The screenplay was written so well that the movie flows more fluid like than water.

There are some memorable moments in the film like when Jenny comes to the rescue of Forrest and asks him to run when a man calls Forrest stupid and his mother tells him that ‘stupid is as stupid does’ and the heartwarming moments between Forrest and his lieutenant.

It is a very sweet and heart-warming film after watching which will leave a smile on your face and heart filled with emotions. All in all, the movie is a sweet box of chocolates.
